Makhana Grades Explained: 4 Sutta to 6+ Sutta

Ask three makhana suppliers for a quotation and you will get three prices that look wildly inconsistent — until you notice they are quoting different grades. Grade is the biggest single driver of price in this product, and it is measured in sutta.

What sutta actually measures

Sutta refers to the diameter of the popped seed, not the raw seed and not its weight. Higher sutta means a larger pop. Because larger seeds are rarer and pop less reliably, price climbs steeply with grade.

Diameter bands vary slightly between processors, which is exactly why a stated tolerance matters more than the grade label alone. A supplier quoting 6 Sutta with a ±1 mm tolerance is telling you something useful. One quoting 6 Sutta with no tolerance is telling you very little.

Which grade do you actually need?

The instinct is to buy the largest grade affordable. That is usually wrong. Grade should follow the format:

• Flavoured retail packs — 5 Sutta is normally the right call. Seasoning adheres well, the pop is large enough to look generous, and the cost per pack stays sane.
• Gifting and premium retail — 6 or 6+ Sutta. Here the visual size is the product; buyers are paying for presence in the pack.
• Value-added manufacturing — 4 Sutta. If the makhana is being milled, puffed or coated beyond recognition, paying for diameter is money burnt.
• Institutional and HoReCa — 5 Sutta, usually. Consistency matters more than size in bulk service.

What to ask for in a quotation

A grade on its own is not a specification. A usable quotation states the grade, the diameter tolerance, the moisture ceiling, the acceptable percentage of broken or damaged pops, and the foreign-matter limit. Those five numbers, together, describe a product you can actually plan around.

If a supplier cannot state them, the price you are comparing is not comparable to anyone else's.
